Misc.

This is the funniest 5 minute summary of what it means to live in a rural part of the South. I don't know how to post you tube videos, so here is the LINK to the clip from another girl's blog. This performance was on our Tupelo morning show... Keep in mind that we live 10 miles outside New Albany, which is a MUCH smaller town than Tupelo, and New Albany is about 25 miles away from Tupelo....

Maybe I was in a silly mood, but I thought it was too funny for words.

You know you are from Memphis

I saw this group on Facebook last night and thought it was really funny... most of these are true! I cut and pasted it (and took out the really tacky ones with bad words) and posted it for all of my Memphis family members!

YOU KNOW YOU'RE FROM MEMPHIS WHEN:

-When you see a liquor store on one side of the street and a church on the other side.

-Everyone you know either works at FedEx or has worked there.

-You knew not to go into Overton Park after dark.

-When our crime rate is something we strive to be tops in every year.

-The main attraction at the most expensive hotel are ducks

-You know a "cousin" of Justin Timberlake

-You know that MusicFest = Mudfest

-Prince Mongo & Jerry "The King" Lawler are on the Mayors ballot

-You went to the Mall of Murder, Ice Skated, and survived to tell about it!

-You have waited for 4 hours to get a drivers license or have your car inspected..

-You dont really care about the Grizzlies, but you love the TIGERS!

- Orange Mound to G'town you gotta represent.

-You know what real Barbecue is.

-Nonconnah means Autobahn

-You're scared of Germantown Cops

- Someone in your family has an Elvis story

-Your're proud of the number one violent crime rate Memphis holds. Because that means you survived living in Memphis.

-Our tap water is like your Evian.

-Our mayor does drugs, how hardcore is that?

-You drive like your gonna kill everyone else.

-You just call the Mississippi "The River."

- You didn't know that the Old Bridge and the New Bridge had names.

-You've had to switch the thermostat from heat to air in the same day

- You can say "Take Poplar" and get anywhere from anywhere.

-You know what is means to "Bleed blue and grey"

-You still call it Memphis State

-You know that if you live anywhere in the city limits you're only a street or two away from ghetto.

-Somebody says "201", the first thing that comes to mind aint got nothin to do with a clock. I bet you'd be hard pressed to find another city where everyone in the city knows the street address of the jail!

-You've had to explain to an out of towner while driving down I-40 that Bellevue is not an airport.

-You go to Raliegh and you know you'll hear gunshots, and simply say "Oh, someone got shot," like it's a common occurance.

-You speed everywhere, EXCEPT Bartlett and Germantown.

-You drive on the same road and it's name changes several times the further you go.

-You know there are at least seven Macon Roads, Kirby Roads, and Raliegh LaGranges.

-You know Corey B. Trotz's number by heart.

-Channel 3 is on YOUR side.

Goals for New Year

It is after midnight, but one of my goals for tonight was to catch up on my blog, so please excuse any comma splices or other grammatical train wrecks!

I have 3 main goals for the upcoming year... one Spiritual, one Physical, one involving Character, and then a few smaller things that I probably won't keep... but they sound good now.

Spiritual:

2008 was not an easy year in a few different ways. On a spiritual level, I feel like I was up and down, "tossed about," and relying on emotions far too much.

I did not use a Bible reading plan this past year because I wanted to study a few books of the Word on a deeper level. I would read a small portion of Scripture, think about it, and often read a sermon or commentary on the passage.

This is wonderful and worked very well... when I was on the top part of the roller coaster... However, when I was looking too hard at self, too caught up in passing things, or too busy to take time to think at all, I found myself not being diligent to seek the Lord as I should.

Our pastor and my husband often quote (I think it's...) Spurgeon as saying, "we have as much of Christ as we want." Whoa... what a stab in the chest, especially when you are forced to admit that you must not want very much of Christ.

Anyway, This year I am going to use a Bible Reading Plan that I have used a few times in the past. John Piper has recommended it for his church, and I have benefited from it as well. There are four bookmarks for the four daily readings (don't be overwhelmed... the readings are not long). There is a reading in the OT, Psalms, Gospels, and NT. I really like it because while you are plowing through Exodus or Ezekiel, you are still getting a bit of the gospels and Psalms.

It is not as in depth as using the commentaries, but I think that consistency over the course of the year will probably be more beneficial than what I did last year. AND, the sections in the gospels and New Testament are quite small and lend themselves to meditation and/or commentary reading.

Physical:

The second goal I have for 2009 is to run the Music City Marathon. Many posts ago I referred to a list of goals I created in high school. In addition to marrying a cowboy, moving to Texas, and having a house with a big front porch, I also listed runing a marathon as a lifetime goal.

Well, I am not pregnant, I actually have a little time to train, and I am not getting any younger!

Best of all, we get to stay in a hotel 2 nights!!! For me, staying overnight in a hotel is like the pinnacle of excitement. I am not kidding... I looked forward to going into labor because going to the hospital was kind of like staying in a hotel!

I am sure I could have found some other way to get my husband to go out of town with me for two nights rather than torture myself for 26.2 miles... but I never really claimed to operate on logic.

I have 3 smaller goals for the marathon... going from most realistic to least...

1. Run it around 4 hours.
2. Beat my father-in-law's marathon time (he ran one 20 or so years ago), which was just under
4 hours. :)
3. Qualify for Boston, which would be 3:40 for my age group. (I'm serious... LEAST realistic,
but, hey, you never know, right?!)

Character:

It has been brought to my attention that I am joked about as being a match-maker (Emma), a busybody, and Mrs. Cravitz... you know, the nosy lady from Bewitched?

Well, although my pride was a little pricked to know people had been talking about me behind my back, I realize it is true and I don't really like that about myself.

I determined that a goal for 2009 would be to stop playing match-maker. When our friends from KY came for a visit, I determined I would not pester Matt about moving to MS. It dawned on me that a better goal would be to just mind my own business this year. It will probably go a long way towards a better 2009! (Some of the difficulties of 2008 would have been avoided if I had learned this lesson earlier.) Of course, learning a lesson and actually putting it into practice are two different things entirely, but I really, truly want to do a better job of not offering unsolicited advice, speaking when I shouldn't, and stickin' my nose where it don't belong! :)

ETC:

Okay, here are the goals that I have every year: I am going to start writing letters every week. There is one friend in particular, Tobey, who I dearly love but do a HORRIBLE job staying in contact with. For example, she sent me a very special gift that means a lot to me... MONTHS ago.... I have not sent her a thank you note and I am an awful friend... Thank you, Tobey... I am sorry! This year I really will try harder than the last 5 years!

I am going to keep my life simple. (Stop chuckling, those of you who know me well!) Seriously, I have taken great pains over the last 2 months to cut away extra stuff and fulfill obligations without renewing them. Hopefully this will greatly benefit the education of our children... When you homeschool, it really helps to be at home at least a few days of the week!

And, I am going to lose 10 pounds. Ha ha just kidding, but I would like to eat less sugar... I know, even more ridiculous. Nevertheless, I mean it this time, I am going to cut back on the sweets... don't ask me how that one is going!

I know there was more I wanted to say, but because "getting off coffee" was on the list, too... I need to go to sleep now... can't keep my eyes open any longer...

redneck adventures

I really wanted to post about our Jesse Tree and advent devotions or Christmas traditions; however, this morning's events have provided a bit more entertaining fodder for post readers (no pun intended... you'll understand in a minute)....

I was not raised in the country, but I always wanted to be a "country girl." In fact, I recently found a list of goals I had to make as a senior in high school for a leadership thing. Ranking in the top 5 was "marry a cowboy, move to Texas, and live in a house with a front porch." I romanticized (key word, here!) what it would be like to live on acreage, live off the land, etc.

BUT, like I said, I was NOT raised in the country.... quite the opposite! I was raised in Germantown, TN and went to a high school with a graduating class of 500 students. So, sometimes I can't help but laugh out loud about where I am now...

Last night Scott went deer hunting and shot a doe right before sunset. He didn't find it before it got dark, and he came on home when searching became fruitless. Before bed he asked if this morning we could all go out and search the woods for it... he knew where it had entered the woods, and it was cold enough last night to be ok....

I agreed, so this morning we bundled up and left the house about 7:30. We (all 4 kids and I) loaded up on the 4 wheeler and rode out to the spot. We fanned out and searched the woods for about half an hour. Finally, I discovered our "deerest" close to a thicket at the bottom of a steep wooded hill. Now for the fun part...

I called the girls to me, and we tried several times to lift it and make our way up the hill. FYI, dead deer are a bit bulky, awkward to carry, and slippery when you are wearing gloves! :) No success. I went up the hill, got the 4 wheeler, and made my way carefully down to the deer. We all five managed to load the thing up on the front and get it tied down.

Let me mention that during this time, there was much crying and frustration for not being able to lift it (me included), distress over the blood coming out of the nose and mouth, and Josh in particular decided to wail as if in mourning the whole time I was getting the 4wheeler... he was under the impression that he brought his rope so that he could personally tie it up and drag it out of the woods... It was definitely necessary to admonish everyone to "bow up" at this point.

I then began the ascent up the steep wooded hill with a deer precariously tied to the front grill. (I am laughing at myself even at this moment... maybe it was a ya had to be there moment, I don't know)

This part ended up taking at least 30-40 minutes and included several stops to re-tie the deer and cut down small trees that its poor head kept whacking into...

Finally, we made it to the road and got it to the house. I called Scott at work, and what does he say? "Great job, baby... do you think you can gut it for me???" Silence on my end of the line... "Ok, maybe that's asking a bit much... I'll do it when I get home..."

After we got off the phone, I thought, "OK, I want to be a farmer, I can do this..." I googled "how to gut a deer" to see what I had to do.

I changed my mind... step 1 was "cut a ring around the vagina and the anus...." I noticed other cautions about cutting too deep and puncturing the bladder, etc and chickened out. Instead, I got all the ice out of the freezer, covered the deer, and am waiting for Scott to get home. He is skipping football to come "string her up" for us.

So... homeschooling took on a bit of a different form this morning... I think it could definitely count as science?!

When I wanted to marry a cowboy and live on a bunch of land, etc... I never, ever thought it would involve what transpired this morning, but I love it! :)
